‘No music director after RD Burman reached the level that Bappi Lahiri did’, Mithun Chakraborty says in an old interview

Bappi Lahiri was the undisputed Disco King of India. The singer gave us a plethora of hits including I Am A Disco Dancer, Yaar Bina Chain Kahan Re, Tamma Tamma Loge, Ooh La La among others. He began his musical journey at the mere age of 3 and went on to start his Bollywood journey in 1973. The singer passed away yesterday, February 15 night.

The singer composed and sang many songs for Mithun Chakraborty. Back in the 80s, Mithun and Bappi were a hit and had a huge fan following. From Dance Dance in 1987 to Guru in 1989 to Prem Pratigya, the duo gave us many hits.

A few years ago, Mithun Chakraborty had opened up about Bappi Lahiri and had said that after RD Burman, only Bappi da was able to reach the heights of success and fame.

WHEN MITHUN COMPARED BAPPI LAHIRI TO RD BURMAN

Mithun Chakraborty in conversation with DNA, once compared Bappi da to composer RD Burman. He said, “The young generation lapped up his songs like ‘Ramba Ho’ (from the film Arman), ‘Hari Om Hari’ (Pyaara Dushman) and his private album with Runa Laila, Superluna. Critics labelled him a copycat, but no music director after RD Burman reached the kind of height that Bappi reached.”

BAPPI LAHIRI PASSES AWAY AT 69

Bappi Lahiri tested positive for Covid-19 in April last year, after which he was confined to full bed rest. A wheelchair with a lift was also installed at his Juhu residence for easy mobility and convenience. He was brought to the hospital after his health deteriorated on Tuesday, Friday 15 night and doctors tried to revive him but they couldn’t.

The family gave out an official statement and wrote, “It’s a deeply sad moment for us Our beloved Bappi Da has left for heavenly abode last midnight. The cremation will take on the arrival of Bappa From LA tomorrow mid-morning, We are seeking love and blessings for his soul. We will keep you updated. Mrs .Lahiri, Mr.Gobind Bansal, Bappa Lahiri, Rema Lahiri”
