The demolition of a temple in Tamil Nadu’s Tambaram near Chennai has sparked off a controversy with video clips doing rounds on social media claiming the demolished structure was a Ram temple.
A video clip shared by Indu Makkal Katchi,
a pro-Hindu outfit, accused the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government of bringing down the Ram temple in Tambaram.
Following the controversy, the Tambaram Commissioner issued a clarification saying that other structures were also being pulled down along with the temple in accordance with 2015 Madras High Court directive.
The police said all structures identified as encroachments built over water bodies were being demolished. The police warned against spreading fake news and videos with malicious content.
Tambaram police commissioner M Ravi said a portion of the church compound was also demolished, not just the temple. Ravi warned strict action against people trying to disturb communal harmony.
“Not just the temple, a portion of a church compound wall was also demolished as it was encroaching upon a water body. A case has also been registered based on Tahsildar’s complaint and strict action will be taken against those who try to disrupt communal harmony,” Ravi said.
